How Can I Make the Insurance Sales Calls Stop?

November 6, 2019

It all started with such an innocent thought. Things are changing--or going to be changing--in your life. And you need to know how those changes will affect your ability to get (and afford) health care coverage.

You have perfectly logical questions such as:

  • What would my insurance costs be if I switched to an employer that doesn’t offer coverage? (<insert link to other blog post)
  • I’m retiring soon. Can you tell me what my insurance options are in retirement? (<insert link to medicare page)
  • I’m thinking about (or going to be) becoming self-employed. How do I get health care coverage?

You start getting curious and do an internet search to see if you can find some online health insurance quotes.

You go to a couple of websites, click “get a quote” and suddenly your phone starts ringing off the hook! Repeated third party calls with people trying to sell you insurance coverage are inundating your phone.

How Can I Make the Insurance Sales Calls Stop?

The calls go on for weeks, and you start to get that sick feeling in your stomach every time the phone rings.  WHAT have I done? I just wanted a couple of quotes!

Thankfully you do have a couple of options to get the information you need AND stop the phone from ringing off the hook with unwanted calls. Here are some suggestions.

Get a Couple of Quotes

It won’t hurt to get a couple of quotes in order to get a better idea on some pricing and options. That way if you do end up needing coverage, you’ll know where you stand from a financial perspective.

And it’s always good to know how your new insurance situation might compare to your current health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

Just make sure you’re getting the full details of the plan they’re offering, coverage details and prices for the policies the companies are quoting you.

Get Your Insurance Quotes in Writing

Whenever you get a price quote from an online insurance broker, it’s important to ask for an email with the proposed coverage--and the costs associated with the coverage. Some companies will quote you “too good to be true” information over the phone.

Then you’ll get the policy in writing only to find out it is missing important components or has high out-of-pocket costs.

A trustworthy broker will gladly email you a summary of costs for the proposed coverage. If someone says they’re unable to provide you with a written quote--or if they say you have to sign up before you can get actual numbers--this is a red flag you shouldn’t ignore.

Use Your “Blocked Number” Feature on Your Phone

If you’re getting calls from the same number over and over again, you can always put the number on your Blocked Number list on your phone.

At the very least, this will stop some calls and texts from coming in. However, it’s important to note that some companies use multiple phone numbers to call from. If so, that could make using your Blocked Number feature a fruitless and/or tedious process.

Don’t Ignore the Calls

Likely the worst thing you can do is to ignore the calls, and ignoring them probably won’t make them go away. A lot of the companies you’ll find online are third party companies that will sell your information to different agents and brokers across the country.

They’ll work hard to get your business as any smart business will do.

Instead of ignoring the calls, answer the calls. Tell them you want a quote, or tell them to place you on their Do Not Call list. The Federal Trade Commission has a national Do Not Call list too, where you can add your phone number.

However, the national Do Not Call list won’t help you if you’ve contacted a company on your own to look for a quote.

Don’t Sign On the Dotted Line Until You’re Sure of What You’re Getting

It might be tempting to just sign up for a policy in order to make the phone calls stop. However, that move could put you in a precarious situation.

Finding health insurance coverage outside of your employer coverage can be overwhelming. You have so many options. And then there’s the fine print.

What if you sign up for a plan only to find out the deductibles and copays are much higher than what you can afford to pay? Or, what if you sign up for a plan that doesn’t cover important components you need, such as maternity care or pre-existing conditions?

Going with the cheapest insurance plan (<insert link to “cheap” article) isn’t the best money-saving plan if the cheap policy doesn’t provide the coverage you need.

Instead, you need a policy that will consider your budget and your insurance coverage needs. For that reason, it’s important not to sign up for a policy just to make the phone calls stop.

You need to be sure of what you’re being offered in terms of coverage and costs.
